Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Warriors Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, demons, and sinister influences expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a violent initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a nasty environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as key figures in the powerful family could help the group enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Fans can expect discovering which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
